The main purpose of this book is (1) to show the historical roots of what at today is known as wokeness, which originated in Marx & Engels, and was refined in the varieties of cultural marxism spun out across the 20th century and (2) to reveal the disastrous results, which we are now living with, above all the insistence by so many on both identifying themselves as victims and accusing imagined oppressors. A recurring theme is the longstanding hatred of the family that started with Engels, and the Left's unceasing resolve to destroy it. A second major theme is the answer: Christ and his Church. All this makes the book worth reading but be prepared for one of the most sloppily edited books I have ever read : uncountable grammatical errors (the author seems to be totally oblivious to the need to choose plural verbs for plural subjects), and far too many obvious spelling mistakes and errors of syntax and diction. Nor is there a clear sense of organization; the repetition and incoherence are inexcusable. Was the manuscript even copyedited? The author habitually documents core ideas and big interpretations with blogs and twitter posts instead of the original sources (i.e. books). The footnotes themselves are a mess -- often incomplete and shoddily formatted. (Compare the likewise non-scholarly Unbroken Thread by Ahmari, where every idea is meticulously and thoroughly documented.) There is no list of works cited and most astonishingly, not an index! Mering deserved a better publisher, who could not only have produced a cleaner and sharper version of her prose, but coached her to develop her arguments more concisely and coherently. Still, there are brilliantly insightful passages here; I found the emphasis on the left's "hidden agenda" of destruction ("the issue isn't the issue; the issue is revolution") to be especially helpful -- never believe what the activists SAY they want because the aim is always something bigger and worse. Worth reading especially for those not well versed in the intellectual history of the left in the USA, despite the weak and spotty documentation.
